Amazon has filed with the U. S. Federal Communications Commission to deploy a constellation of more than 5,000 satellites by 2028, aiming to provide global mobile phone services including voice, SMS, data, and emergency communications. The company will use spectrum acquired through its $11.6 billion purchase of Globalstar. This marks Amazon's entry into satellite mobile communications, a market currently led by SpaceX's Starlink.

Amazon has submitted an application to the U. S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy a constellation of more than 5,000 satellites by 2028, with the goal of providing mobile phone communication services to consumers worldwide. The system would support voice calls, text messaging, data services, and emergency communications. Amazon said it will use radio spectrum obtained through its recent acquisition of Globalstar for $11.6 billion. The filing marks Amazon's first foray into satellite-based mobile communications.

The satellite mobile communications market is currently dominated by SpaceX's Starlink service, which covers more than 150 countries and provides high-speed internet connectivity via its satellite constellation. SpaceX has partnered with U. telecom operator T-Mobile US and UK-based Virgin Media O2, among others, to offer mobile phone services to users in areas where traditional mobile networks are unavailable.

Amazon already operates more than 390 satellites in orbit for broadband internet services. In June 2026, the company received FCC approval to extend the deadline for deploying approximately 1,600 satellites to the end of this month.
