Amazon's Zoox to Launch First Paid Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas on August 10

Amazon's autonomous driving company Zoox announced it will officially launch its paid robotaxi service in Las Vegas on August 10. This marks Zoox's first commercial operation, transitioning from free rides to a paid model and putting it in direct competition with Alphabet's Waymo. Since 2025, Zoox has offered free driverless service in parts of Las Vegas and San Francisco, and in July 2026 it received a temporary exemption from federal regulators allowing it to begin charging fares.

Zoox's autonomous vehicles feature a distinctive toaster-like design, with no traditional steering wheel or brake pedal. The cabin has face-to-face seating for four passengers and bidirectional wheels, allowing the vehicle to move forward or backward without turning around. Since launching free service in 2025, Zoox has transported nearly 1 million passengers across Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami.

The company did not disclose a specific base fare but said it would reference the 'comfort' level of ride-hailing services, aiming to remain competitive.

Federal regulatory approval is only the first step toward charging. To expand beyond Las Vegas, Zoox will still need permits from state and local governments. However, not all regions are open to commercial autonomous services. In February 2026, New York's governor abandoned a proposal to allow commercial robotaxis in certain areas; in March of the same year, New York City allowed Waymo's operating permit to expire, ending its limited testing.
