AMD Acquires AI Chip Startup Taalas, Adds Custom Inference Technology to Instinct Roadmap

AMD announced on Thursday that it had reached an agreement to acquire Taalas, a chip startup headquartered in Toronto. The company produces chips that are custom-hardwired for a single AI model, rather than general-purpose chips. Taalas's technology trades flexibility for specific-model output speeds that the company says are thousands of times faster than traditional GPUs, at lower cost. AMD representatives did not disclose the transaction price. Taalas has raised a cumulative $219 million in venture funding since its founding in 2023.

Taalas's current chips can run a small version of Meta's Llama 3.1 model, and the company is developing chips for larger, more advanced models. Its chips use mature process technology from TSMC and on-chip high-speed SRAM memory. Taalas chief executive Ljubisa Bajic said on the company's website that the firm had developed a platform that converts any AI model into custom silicon, taking just two months from receiving a new model to hardware implementation.

The acquisition comes about seven months after Nvidia's $20 billion purchase of assets from Groq, a high-performance AI chip designer, which was Nvidia's largest deal ever. Alternative chips such as those produced by Taalas and Groq are especially important for low-latency applications that prioritize the first-response time of AI models.

AMD recently began delivering its first rack-scale system, Helios, to customers including Meta and Microsoft, competing with Nvidia's integrated server racks. AMD said it will integrate Taalas's chips and technology into its product roadmap, including systems featuring its central processors and Instinct GPUs. In addition, AMD announced a partnership with Cerebras in July, with plans to integrate its AI chips into AMD systems later this year.

AMD has been filling in the components and technologies needed to build Helios racks through acquisitions. In 2024, it acquired Silo AI, which develops AI models, for $665 million, and bought ZT Systems for $4.9 billion, providing the technology foundation for its rack-scale products. In 2025, AMD acquired several smaller AI companies, including MK1, which develops inference software.
