American Airlines Adds Seven International Routes in 2027, Most Using Airbus A321XLR

American Airlines has announced seven new international routes for 2027, several of which will be operated by the Airbus A321XLR. The specific routes are as follows: Charlotte to Barcelona, starting May 27, on Boeing 777-200ER aircraft; Chicago O'Hare to Tokyo Narita, starting March 19, on Boeing 787-9; New York Kennedy to Amsterdam, starting March 28, on Airbus A321XLR; New York Kennedy to Nice, starting May 6, on Airbus A321XLR; Philadelphia to Porto, starting March 28, on Airbus A321XLR; Philadelphia to Reykjavik, starting May 27, on Airbus A321neo; and Philadelphia to Vienna, starting May 6, on Airbus A321XLR.

Additionally, American Airlines will add a fourth daily flight between New York Kennedy and London Heathrow on March 28, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The Airbus A321XLR offers extended range capability, with a maximum range of 4,700 nautical miles, and its single-aisle design is smaller than the Boeing 777 or 787, resulting in lower operating costs.

Last year, American Airlines introduced a new interior and configuration for the A321XLR, allocating more space to premium seats, which account for one-fifth of the aircraft's total seats. The carrier plans to use the XLR model to serve smaller European cities from its Philadelphia hub or from New York.

American Airlines stated that the Vienna route will be extended until early January 2028 to cover the European Christmas market season. United Airlines also announced its 2027 destinations in the same week, adding routes to Ljubljana, Slovenia, and Okinawa, Japan, among others.

Earlier this year, American Airlines said that approximately 80% of its flying is domestic and 20% is international.
