Apple Adjusts EU App Store Fees: 5% External Distribution, 26% In-App Purchases
Apple will cut its EU App Store commission for in-app purchases from 30% to 26% and charge a 5% fee for external distribution, effective Oct 1. The changes, made to comply with the Digital Markets Act, also remove per-install fees and add parental consent for under-18 users' alternative payments. The European Commission welcomed the move.
Apple has announced changes to its App Store fee structure in Europe to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act. Under the new plan, Apple will charge a 5% commission on digital transactions for apps distributed outside the App Store, replacing its previous, more complex fee structure. Meanwhile, the commission for in-app purchases in Europe will be reduced from the standard 30% to 26%.
Apple also agreed to a series of adjustments to its European App Store, including eliminating per-install fees for developers who do not use the iPhone app marketplace. The new terms abolish the previously charged initial acquisition fee and store service fee.
Apple also introduced new child safety measures, requiring parental consent for any alternative payment processing or links to web-based transactions for app users under the age of 18. Apple said the changes will take effect on October 1, and are aimed at resolving differences with the EU and the European Commission. The Commission welcomed the changes and will monitor their implementation.
