Apple CEO Succession: John Ternus to Succeed Tim Cook on Sept 1, 2026
Apple announced that John Ternus will become CEO on September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook. The two appeared together for the first time since the April 20 succession announcement at the Los Angeles premiere of Ted Lasso season four on July 27. Cook called Ternus the perfect successor and said the transition is smooth. Ternus, a 25-year Apple veteran, will take over as Cook becomes executive chairman.
Apple's chief executive succession is approaching its handover date. John Ternus, who will officially become CEO on September 1, 2026, attended the Los Angeles premiere of the fourth season of Ted Lasso on July 27 alongside current CEO Tim Cook. This marked the first public joint appearance by the two leaders since Apple announced the executive transition plan on April 20. At the event, both Cook and Ternus wore blue suits, collarless white shirts, and "Believe" lapel pins.
Cook said at the event that Ternus is the "perfect person" to succeed him as CEO and described the entire transition process as very smooth. Cook previously explained that he chose to hand over the reins at this time because Apple's business is stable, its product roadmap is clear, and his successor is fully prepared. After retiring, Cook will become executive chairman, continuing to support Ternus on government relations and major decisions.
Ternus has worked at Apple for 25 years, previously serving as senior vice president of hardware engineering and, since late 2025, as the executive sponsor for the design organization. Regarding his upcoming appointment, Ternus said he feels immensely honored and excited.
