Apple Classifies iPhone X and 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro as Obsolete, Ending Official Repairs

Apple has officially designated the iPhone X and the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro as obsolete, discontinuing official repair and component replacement services. The iPhone X was added to the obsolete list on August 13, 2026, while the MacBook Pro received the same classification. The iPhone X, released in 2017, pioneered Face ID and the OLED display; the MacBook Pro was the first to feature the T2 security chip and butterfly keyboard. Users with these devices now face dependence on third-party repair options.

Apple has recently added the iPhone X and the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro to its obsolete products list, officially ceasing official repair services and component replacements for both devices. Under Apple's policy, products discontinued for five to seven years are considered vintage; repairs may still be available if replacement parts exist. Once more than seven years have passed since discontinuation, they are classified as obsolete, with no official support. The iPhone X entered the obsolete list on August 13, 2026.

The iPhone X was launched in 2017 as the first Apple handset with Face ID, replacing the Touch ID Home button, and the first iPhone to feature an OLED display, introducing the full-screen design with a notch. Early in its sales cycle, the device experienced green lines along the screen edges and Face ID module failures. Apple offered device replacements to affected customers at retail stores but did not conduct a full recall. Software support has remained at iOS 16.

Also added to the obsolete list on the same day was the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro. This model was the first MacBook to feature the T2 security chip, handling Touch ID data and secure boot management. It used a butterfly keyboard, for which Apple offered a keyboard replacement program that ran until 2024. The system's compatibility tops out at macOS Sequoia, and it cannot be updated further through third-party projects.

For users still using these devices, any future hardware failure can only be addressed through third-party repair services.
