Apple iOS 27 Preview Unveils Image Verification System for iPhone Photo Authenticity
Apple is developing a hardware-based image authenticity verification system called Apple Reference Image, detected in the privacy statement of the fifth developer preview of iOS 27. The system confirms whether photos or videos were captured by a genuine iPhone through hardware and cloud checks, embedding anti-counterfeit data in image metadata when users enable the optional Reference mode. Verification relies on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers, which receive only sensor data, hash values and evaluation results, not original image content. The feature targets professional photographers and journalists but remains in testing and is not yet publicly available.
Apple is developing an image verification system called Apple Reference Image, with related clues appearing in the privacy statement of the fifth developer preview of iOS 27. Once the feature is launched, an optional Reference mode will be added to camera settings; when users shoot with this mode enabled, the system embeds anti-counterfeit data in the image metadata.
To verify photo authenticity, users tap the Reference badge on an image, and the device sends the RAW original image, sensor digital signature, capture time period, and the camera sensor's unique hardware identifier to Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. After completing verification, the server confirms whether the photo came from the corresponding physical camera sensor, assigns a unique identifier, and returns an authenticated version to the user's device. During verification, Apple only receives sensor data, hash values and evaluation results, and does not retain or access the original photo content. If a hardware sensor is found to be at risk of tampering or compromise, Apple reserves the right to refuse certification and can retroactively revoke all certifications previously granted to that sensor.
Authenticated photos and videos can be viewed on iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, and can be verified directly on Mac by clicking the badge. The feature requires shooting in the specific mode and involves full supply chain and hardware-level certification, primarily targeting professional photographers, journalists and others with high requirements for image authenticity and copyright verification.
Traditional camera makers Leica, Sony and Canon have adopted the C2PA content credential standard, and Google has integrated a similar mechanism into its latest hardware devices. Apple's Apple Reference Image provides authenticity proof for digital images through hardware-level data binding. The feature is currently in the testing and development phase and has not been officially opened to the public.
