Apple MacBook Neo 8GB RAM Swaps to SSD, 256GB Model Writes 20TB in Test
Apple's MacBook Neo, launched in March 2026, uses an 8GB RAM configuration that relies on SSD swap files under memory pressure. In a three-hour continuous-use test, the device wrote nearly 900GB to its non-replaceable SSD. For the 256GB version, this pace implies about 20TB written over 58 days, consuming roughly 5% of its estimated 414TB endurance. The 512GB model offers two to three times more endurance.
Apple introduced the budget laptop MacBook Neo in March 2026, targeting everyday computing and home PC use. The device comes with 8GB of memory, and when memory runs low, the system maintains operation by using swap files on the SSD. The SSD in the MacBook Neo is not user-replaceable.
In a continuous-use test, the device was used primarily as a web terminal, including research, reading, and communication via Chrome, along with running WhatsApp and Discord. The results showed that in just three hours, the MacBook Neo wrote nearly 900GB of data to the SSD.
Based on an estimated endurance of roughly 400 to 420TB for the 256GB version, the SSD would reach its rated write limit after approximately 1,400 hours, or 58 days, of all-day basic office tasks. The 512GB version's SSD endurance is about two to three times that of the 256GB model, reaching its rated write limit after approximately 5,000 hours of sustained use.
