Apple Patent Suggsts Camera Control Button May Come to iPad

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Apple has received a patent for an input system for portable electronic devices that could bring a camera control button similar to the one on the the iPhone 16 series to iPads. The patent describes a single button with two strain sensing elements capable of distinguishing light touch, swipe, and full press, with force thresholds of approximately 0.8-1.2 Newtons for touch and 3.0-4.0 Newtons for press. Filed as a continuation of a December 2025 proposal, the design is shown primarily in iPad form in the patent drawings, though no launch schedule has been announced.

The button was first introduced in 2024 with the iPhone 16 series, and the patent filing describes a functional mechanism consistent with the existing iPhone version. The patent, titled "Input System for Portable Electronic Devices," does not directly mention iPad or iPhone in the text, referring to devices only by the generic term "tablet computer." However, most of the the 20 20 drawings depict iPad form, with the remainder showing iPhones and close-ups of the button's operating principle.

The patent details preset actions of the control component. Two strain sensing elements are configured inside the button, and by comparing read data, the press position is determined using a triangulation-like method. When input force exceeds the pressure required by the strain sensors, the internal dome switch collapses under force, enabling a single button to recognize light touch, swipe, or full press. This mechanism is identical to the camera control button on current iPhones.

The patent filing specifies the force thresholds for triggering each sensing element. The first force threshold (touch level) is approximately 0.8 to 1.2 Newtons, and the second (press level) is approximately 3.0 to 4.0 Newtons. When the user applies pressure reaching these ranges, the button triggers corresponding haptic feedback. The patent is a continuation of an earlier version of the same proposal from December 2025, indicating Apple continues to consider adding a camera control button to iPads.

Apple files hundreds of patents each year, and patent approval does not necessarily mean a product will ultimately reach the market. However, the patent drawings and functional descriptions show that the control component design has been developed for the tablet form factor, though no specific launch schedule has been announced.
