Bezos-Led Group to Acquire One-Third of Liverpool, with Majority Option at $8 Billion
Jeff Bezos-led consortium 1892 Holdings has agreed with Fenway Sports Group to buy approximately one-third of Liverpool Football Club at a transaction value of about $7.1 billion. The group holds the option to become the club's controlling shareholder within 12 months at a valuation of roughly $8 billion. Manchester United's US-listed shares rose as much as 4.8% on the news. The consortium is managed by Amit Bhatia, who will become Liverpool's vice-chairman, while Bezos will not join the board.
An investment consortium led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reached an agreement with Fenway Sports Group to acquire a minority stake in English Premier League side Liverpool. Fenway Sports Group announced the transaction on August 14, with the consortium purchasing about one-third of the club at a transaction value of approximately $7.1 billion. Under the terms, the consortium holds an option to become Liverpool's controlling shareholder within 12 months at a valuation of about $8 billion. Shares of Premier League rivals Manchester United rose as much as 4.8% in US trading on the news.
The consortium, named 1892 Holdings, is managed by businessman Amit Bhatia, who previously co-owned Queens Park Rangers. Its largest investor is K5 Global, with an investment exceeding $1 billion; Bezos is a principal investor in the K5 fund. Other members include K5 Sports and EE Capital, the family office of Elaine Saverin and Eduardo Saverin, a co-founder of Facebook. Bhatia will become Liverpool's new vice-chairman and join an expanded board. Bezos will not join the board, though Brian Baum of K5 Sports and Elaine Saverin will take board seats. The investment group declined to comment.
Liverpool said the new minority shareholders will bring together specialists in global business, technology and investment to support the club's long-term goals. Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon said the partnership continues the club's approach of making decisions with a long-term horizon, attracting globally respected investors and corporate leaders. Bezos, who previously weighed acquisitions of the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League, has made this his first investment in a sports franchise. According to Forbes, Bezos has a net worth of $272 billion. Liverpool ranked fourth in 2026 global football club valuations at $6 billion. The club has won 20 English top-flight championships, most recently in 2025.
