CATL Achieves Core Operations Carbon Neutrality by End of 2025, 20 Battery Plants Certified Zero-Carbon
CATL achieved carbon neutrality for core operations by end-2025, with 20 battery plants certified zero-carbon under ISO 14068-1 and 100% zero-carbon electricity in core operations. Over 80% of power battery lifecycle emissions occur in the upstream supply chain, which can total more than five times manufacturing emissions. The company disclosed a 2035 value-chain carbon neutrality roadmap, completed carbon accounting for over 100 core suppliers, and launched a zero-carbon supply chain programme with strategic partners.
In the full lifecycle carbon emissions of power batteries, more than 80% are concentrated in the upstream supply chain, covering mineral extraction, metal smelting, cathode and anode material synthesis, and component processing. Total emissions from these stages can be more than five times those of the battery manufacturing stage. Advancing value-chain decarbonisation faces multiple practical challenges, and domestic enterprises have begun practical exploration.
CATL achieved carbon neutrality for its core operations by the end of 2025. Twenty of its battery plants passed ISO 14068-1 zero-carbon factory certification, and the proportion of zero-carbon electricity used in core operations reached 100%. At TWh-scale mass production, the company has verified the feasibility of large-scale zero-carbon manufacturing.
The company for the first time disclosed its value-chain carbon neutrality action roadmap towards 2035. Leveraging its proprietary carbon management tool, it has built a full-chain carbon data traceability platform and completed carbon accounting based on actual scenarios for over 100 core first-tier suppliers. In addition, it has incorporated carbon footprint and renewable energy usage ratio into its supplier management system, launched a zero-carbon supply chain empowerment programme, and proposed the establishment of an industry zero-carbon ecosystem collaboration platform. It has also reached strategic cooperation with the National Centre for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation and the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange.
