CATL Halts Hungary Plant Production Over Nickel Exposure Safety Issues
Hungarian authorities said CATL's Debrecen plant must fix all occupational safety defects related to nickel exposure before starting production. The plant, a EUR 7.34 billion investment announced in 2022 with planned capacity of 100 GWh, has completed partial rectification and is only permitted to conduct equipment commissioning.
The Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office said on August 31 that CATL's Hungarian plant's cell project must complete rectification of all occupational safety defects related to nickel exposure before production can commence. The plant has completed partial rectification, and local regulators currently only allow equipment commissioning.
In August 2022, CATL announced plans to invest EUR 7.34 billion to build a large battery plant in Debrecen, Hungary, with a total planned capacity of 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The plant produces both battery modules and cells. Debrecen is the capital of Hajdú-Bihar County.
