Delta Air Lines Flight Hit by Fake Wi-Fi Signal, Crew Shuts Network for 30 Minutes

A Delta Air Lines flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta experienced a fake Wi-Fi signal incident mid-flight. An unidentified passenger is suspected of creating a fraudulent wireless network, prompting crew members to shut down the official onboard network for about 30 minutes. The pilot sent two messages to air traffic control during the flight, noting that a passenger had created a "scam Wi-Fi" designed to masquerade as the aircraft's official wireless network, and mentioned that some passengers had just attended a cybersecurity conference held in Las Vegas last week.

Delta Air Lines spokesperson Morgan Durant said flight safety was never affected, the onboard operating system was not disturbed, and the onboard network itself was not hacked. The company is working with federal law enforcement and aviation regulators on a comprehensive investigation to establish the full facts. The Atlanta Police Department has referred the matter to federal authorities. Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Steve Kulm said no formal report on the incident had been received, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately respond.

The passenger's specific purpose remains unclear. From a technical standpoint, spoofing a genuine network using commercially available hardware is not complicated; such tools are typically used by professional security testers to audit corporate security, or by network enthusiasts to study related technologies.
