Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for $15 Million Over TV Box Photo, Samsung Seeks Dismissal

In May 2026, Dua Lipa's legal team filed a lawsuit against Samsung in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. The plaintiff alleges that Samsung used a copyrighted photograph of the singer without permission and placed it prominently on the outer packaging of Samsung televisions sold through retail channels. The complaint states that Samsung used Lipa's likeness for commercial purposes without authorization and that multiple cease-and-desist notices were sent to Samsung before the lawsuit was filed. Lipa is seeking $15 million, with claims covering copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of the right of publicity.

Samsung responded several days after the lawsuit was filed. The company said the image of Lipa was used to show content available on Samsung TV Plus, its free streaming service, and not to promote the televisions themselves. Samsung said the image came from a content partner that had explicitly warranted that all necessary authorizations had been obtained, and that Samsung printed the image on retail packaging in reliance on that warranty. It therefore denies intentionally misappropriating Lipa's likeness.

Samsung has asked the court to dismiss Lipa's $15 million lawsuit and, in a recently filed legal document, requested dismissal in full. Samsung argues that nothing would lead a person to believe that Dua Lipa endorses Samsung televisions. Samsung's attorneys said the images merely show the television screen, serving as examples to demonstrate applications and the content the television can play.
