Dutch Consumer Group Joins Lawsuit Accusing Sony of PlayStation Store Monopoly

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

The "Stop Killing Games" initiative has joined a Dutch consumer organization's class action against Sony, alleging the company monopolizes digital game sales on the PlayStation platform. The suit claims Sony's exclusive PlayStation Store sales and its plan to end physical disc production by 2028 leave players without competitive purchasing options. Dutch players pay 47% more for digital games than physical copies, with losses exceeding 435 million euros since 2013. The lawsuit seeks approximately 457 million dollars in compensation and demands that third-party retailers be allowed to sell PlayStation digital game codes. Sony has said it will not change its plans.

The global player rights initiative "Stop Killing Games" has announced it is joining a Dutch consumer organization's class action against Sony, challenging the monopoly position of digital game sales on the PlayStation platform. The lawsuit alleges that Sony sells digital games exclusively through the PlayStation Store and plans to stop producing physical game discs in 2028, depriving players of competitive purchasing options.

Dutch PlayStation players pay on average 47% more for digital versions of games than for physical copies. Since 2013, Sony has caused more than 435 million euros in losses to Dutch consumers. The lawsuit seeks approximately 457 million dollars in compensation and asks the court to allow third-party retailers to sell PlayStation digital game redemption codes, in order to introduce market competition.

Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that it would stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. At a recent earnings call, Sony Group Chief Financial Officer Tao Lin said the company would not change its plans as a result. Meanwhile, Mexican legislators have filed a complaint with the country's national antitrust commission, alleging that Sony is using its market position to harm consumer interests.
