IBM Partners with OpenAI to Integrate GPT-5.6 into Consulting Platform and Train Consultants

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

IBM on August 13, 2026 announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring the startup's models to more enterprise clients, with terms undisclosed. IBM will establish a dedicated OpenAI team within its consulting unit, train tens of thousands of consultants on technologies including Codex and APIs, and integrate OpenAI models such as GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work into its Consulting Advantage platform. The agreement, which follows a June 2026 cybersecurity tie-up with OpenAI and an Anthropic alliance less than a year earlier, supports IBM's model-neutral strategy alongside its own Granite AI systems.

On August 13, 2026, IBM announced a partnership with OpenAI aimed at bringing OpenAI's AI models and tools to a broader range of enterprise customers. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Less than a year ago, IBM struck a similar alliance with Anthropic. The two companies will jointly market AI products and develop customized solutions for industries including financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail.

Mike Healy, managing partner of IBM Consulting, said IBM will establish a dedicated OpenAI business team within its consulting division. In the coming months, IBM plans to train and certify tens of thousands of consultants in OpenAI-related technologies, with training focused on Codex, APIs, cybersecurity, and consulting solution certification. IBM will also assemble a team of "frontier deployment specialists," who will receive professional training through the OpenAI partner network. At the same time, IBM plans to integrate OpenAI's latest models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into its IBM Consulting Advantage AI platform.

OpenAI is expanding its enterprise market through consultancies and technology partners, having previously announced collaboration with IT services firms such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services. IBM pursues a "model-neutral" strategy, combining its own Granite series of AI models with third-party products, and offering integration of multiple AI models through the watsonx platform and its global consulting business.

In a recent earnings call, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna said enterprises are adopting AI to supplement, rather than replace, IBM's traditional mainframe business. In June 2026, IBM and OpenAI cooperated on cybersecurity; this new agreement further deepens that collaboration by integrating OpenAI models with IBM's Autonomous Security service.
