Intel Unarchives ONE Mono Font Two Days After Archiving in 2026

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Intel archived its open-source ONE Mono font repository as part of a cost-cutting review of inactive projects, then unarchived it two days later in 2026. The font, launched in 2023, was developed with low-vision and visually impaired testers to improve character distinction in code. Its last update was in 2024, with repository activity from 2025 focused on README documentation. Intel gave no reason for the reversal or its maintenance plans.

Since CEO Lip-Bu Tan took office, Intel has continued to streamline its various businesses, with open-source projects also within the scope of cuts. Intel is reducing open-source projects to lower costs, and the ONE Mono font was briefly included in that cleanup.

The ONE Mono open-source font was launched by Intel in 2023. During its design, Intel invited low-vision and other visually impaired developers to participate in testing, focusing on improving characters that are easily confused when reading code and reducing visual fatigue caused by prolonged programming. Easily confused letters and symbols use more clearly differentiated glyphs; for example, the lowercase letter e and uppercase letter G were specifically adjusted. The font increases the height difference between uppercase and lowercase letters and uses longer ascenders and descenders, making word outlines in code more distinct.

The most recent update to ONE Mono was in 2024, and from 2025 repository activity has mainly centered on README documentation. With the project lacking substantive code changes for a long time, Intel is cleaning up open-source projects that are inactive or whose maintainers have left, and the ONE Mono font repository was archived by Intel. Two days after the repository was archived, Intel unarchived it. Intel did not explain the reason, nor did it say whether active development and maintenance will continue.
