iPhone 18 Pro Max May Exclusively Feature Variable Aperture Main Camera
Market reports since 2024 indicate Apple plans to introduce a variable aperture lens for the iPhone 18 Pro series, a first for the iPhone line. Leaked documents reference only the Pro Max model, leaving the smaller iPhone 18 Pro's status unclear. Current iPhones from the 14 Pro through the 17 Pro use a fixed f/1.78 aperture. A variable aperture would allow adjustable depth of field, with smaller apertures enhancing sharpness and larger apertures producing softer background blur. Both iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to launch next month alongside Apple's first foldable iPhone.
Since 2024, the market has repeatedly reported that Apple plans to introduce a variable aperture lens for the iPhone 18 Pro series. If the technology is ultimately adopted, it would mark the first time the iPhone product line uses a variable aperture design.
The leaked documents do not mention the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, so it remains unclear whether it will also feature a variable aperture lens, or whether it was simply omitted due to incomplete file contents.
To date, Apple has not adopted a variable aperture solution on the iPhone. From the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 17 Pro, the main camera has used a fixed f/1.78 aperture, with the lens remaining fully open during shooting. If the iPhone 18 Pro Max adopts a variable aperture lens, users would be able to adjust the aperture size for more flexible depth-of-field control. A smaller aperture helps improve overall image sharpness and focus range, while a larger aperture delivers softer background blur.
Apart from differences in body size and battery life, the last time Apple significantly differentiated the two Pro models in imaging was the iPhone 15 Pro series, when the iPhone 15 Pro Max was equipped with a tetraprism telephoto lens that the smaller iPhone 15 Pro did not receive. Both iPhone 18 Pro models are reportedly set to launch next month alongside Apple's first foldable iPhone.
