The driver had forgotten to apply the brakes, and the conductor activated the emergency brake. All 26 passengers were uninjured. Three passengers who had planned to alight at the station instead got off at the next stop, and the incident caused a 16-minute delay.
At around 11 pm on August 18, a train overshot the station at Murasaki-no Station on the Tohoku Line in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture. East Japan Railway's Morioka Operations Division announced on August 19 that an upbound local train (four-car formation) bound for Ichinoseki from Morioka failed to stop at the designated position upon entering the station, coming to a halt about 900 meters past the platform. According to the division, the driver had forgotten to operate the brakes while preoccupied with other thoughts, and the conductor activated the emergency brake after noticing the anomaly.
The train carried 26 passengers, none of whom were injured. As returning the train to the correct stopping position would have taken considerable time, the operator decided to let the train pass through the station directly, and the three passengers who had planned to alight there instead got off at the next station. The incident caused a 16-minute delay to the train.
