Microsoft Confirms False Windows Defender Alerts, Fix Pending
Microsoft has confirmed that some Windows 11 and Windows 10 users are receiving false "Enable virus protection" notifications, despite their systems being protected. The issue affects Windows 11 23H2, 24H2, and 25H2, as well as Windows 10, and bypasses notification settings. Microsoft is investigating and will deliver a fix via a future Defender update.
Some Windows 11 users have recently been receiving persistent "Enable virus protection" notifications, claiming that their systems are unprotected and prompting them to turn on Microsoft Defender antivirus. Microsoft has not disclosed which specific update triggered the issue.
The problem affects Windows 11 23H2, 24H2, and 25H2, as well as Windows 10. Since the system's protection is actually still active, clicking the notification typically just opens the Windows Security Center or Defender homepage without changing any settings. The notification also bypasses Windows' normal notification settings, so disabling system notifications or enabling "Do Not Disturb" mode does not prevent it from appearing. Windows 7 is not affected because it no longer receives Defender updates.
The false alerts were first observed in early August, with reports increasing noticeably over the past few days. A Microsoft software engineer confirmed about two weeks ago that the company was investigating the matter, but no official fix has been released yet. Microsoft has stated that a solution will be delivered through a future Microsoft Defender antivirus update, with more information to follow. Other confirmed Windows issues include a mouse cursor anomaly after Windows 11 updates and system wallpapers being reset.
