Microsoft Edge to Phase Out Manifest V2 Extensions from August 2026, 58 Affected, 3 Without MV3 Alternative

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

Microsoft announced it will phase out Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions in Edge from August 2026, following Chrome's lead. The roll-out begins in preview channels and reaches the stable version by end-2026. Of the 58 MV2 extensions with substantial usage, three lack MV3 replacements. uBlock Origin, heavily reliant on MV2, will require users to switch to the Lite version. Enterprise-managed devices are exempt until early 2027.

Microsoft recently updated its timeline for deprecating Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions, announcing it will gradually phase out the legacy extension architecture in the Edge browser. This follows Google Chrome's full termination of MV2 extension support. As early as the end of 2022, Microsoft had planned to extend MV2 extension support to around January 2024, but after multiple delays and observations, Microsoft decided to follow suit and push forward the Edge transition.

According to the latest timeline, Microsoft will begin disabling remaining MV2 extensions in the Canary, Dev, and Beta preview channels of Edge in August 2026, with the policy gradually expanding to the Stable channel for general users in the following months. Microsoft aims to complete the transition for ordinary consumers by the end of 2026.

Microsoft's official data shows that only 58 MV2 extensions in the Edge add-on store have substantial usage, and only 3 lack any corresponding MV3 alternative. The most affected include the ad-blocking tool uBlock Origin, which cannot be directly converted to an MV3 version due to its deep reliance on MV2's underlying architecture capabilities; users must switch to alternatives such as uBlock Origin Lite with reduced functionality.

For enterprise users, Microsoft provides a more generous buffer period. Managed enterprise devices will not be affected by the first consumer-focused deprecation wave, and the official deprecation for enterprises has been postponed to early 2027.
