Microsoft Expands Windows 11 Low-Latency Profile to Third-Party Apps, Boosting CPU to 4.6GHz
Microsoft has extended the Windows 11 low-latency profile feature to third-party and native applications. Using rapid-sleep technology, the scheduler briefly pushes CPU cores to near-peak frequency for one to three seconds during app launches before returning to deep sleep, accelerating startup while curbing energy use. First flagged in May 2026 and delivered from June, the feature originally covered only Windows shell elements. The August 2026 security update KB5121003 extended it to all apps, lifting performance-core frequency to near 4.6GHz and efficiency cores above 80%.
Microsoft's low-latency profile feature in Windows 11 has been extended to a wide range of applications. The mechanism employs rapid-sleep technology: when a user launches an application, the system scheduler instantly raises CPU core frequency to near-peak levels and holds it for one to three seconds to complete high-load loading tasks, before immediately returning the CPU to deep sleep. The mechanism is designed to accelerate software loading while reducing overall energy consumption.
The feature was first revealed in May 2026 and began rolling out to users in June, but initially applied only to Windows shell elements such as the Start menu, search bar and notification center. Following the August 2026 security update KB5121003, the feature now applies to third-party and native applications. Prior to this, Microsoft update logs had mentioned plans to accelerate application startup without specifying a timeline.
In comparative testing, before the update was installed, launching applications such as the Weather app, Epic Games Store, Chrome or Calculator saw CPU frequency fluctuate naturally with load, and heavyweight software still took several seconds to load. After the update, the moment an application is clicked, CPU performance-core frequency can rise to near 4.6GHz, while efficiency cores simultaneously climb above 80%, with all applications showing faster startup.
Microsoft is using a controlled feature rollout mechanism, with the feature to be gradually extended to all users. Users can monitor real-time CPU clock speeds via HWiNFO or Task Manager to confirm whether the feature is active. Microsoft says that with the full deployment of low-latency profiles and continued refactoring of WinUI, Windows 11 will deliver further improvements in running speed and memory footprint.
