Microsoft MVP's Rebrand Registry Documents 158 Renames of 72 Products; 2023 Set Record with 18
Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Loryan Strant has launched the Rebrand Registry website to track name changes across the company's product lineup. The site currently records 158 renaming events spanning 72 products and counts annual rebrands since 2012. That year proved record-setting: 18 products were renamed in 2023, the highest annual tally yet. Strant previously built a separate tool, Let Me Correct That For You, which flags inconsistent product-name spellings, including the camel case used for OneDrive against the conventional capitalization applied to Copilot. The registry lists only active products that have undergone renaming.
Microsoft has long been known for frequently changing product names, a practice that has now spawned a dedicated tracking website. Loryan Strant, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, has created the Rebrand Registry website to document name changes across existing Microsoft products throughout their history. The site currently covers 72 Microsoft products and 158 renaming records, and compiles annual rename counts since 2012, with 2023 seeing 18 products renamed - the highest figure on record.
Strant previously developed another tracking tool, Let Me Correct That For You, which chronicles inconsistent spellings found in Microsoft product names. That site has noted that Microsoft uses camel case for OneDrive while applying conventional capitalization to products such as Copilot. The Rebrand Registry includes only products that remain in operation and have undergone name changes, and therefore excludes any fully discontinued or abandoned projects.
Data charts and analysis pages for the registry are publicly displayed for visitors to consult.
