Microsoft Plans WinUI 3 Overhaul of Windows 11 Legacy Dialogs and Popups
Microsoft is advancing its Windows 11 modernization by rebuilding legacy dialogs and popups with the WinUI 3 framework, despite prior performance concerns. The company is extending WinUI from application-level use into the system shell. In preview builds, the AutoPlay dialog has been redesigned with centered placement, dark backgrounds, rounded corners, and new "Always" and "Only once" options. Plans also include a September 2026 Patch Tuesday update featuring Taskbar position adjustments and a Bing-free Windows Search.
Microsoft is pushing forward with the modernization of Windows 11, planning a comprehensive renovation of legacy dialogs and popups through a rebuild based on the WinUI 3 framework. Although the framework previously exhibited performance shortcomings, the company has formulated corresponding optimization and improvement plans and has begun extending WinUI from the application layer into the system shell. Microsoft has stated its full commitment to the framework, enforcing its adoption within the system's underlying architecture, with related changes already visible in system preview builds.
In the system preview build, the AutoPlay dialog has been rebuilt. Since Windows 8, this prompt had been pinned to the top-right corner of the screen; in future updates, it will revert to a formally centered dialog. The updated version is consistent with the Windows 11 visual style, featuring a dark background, rounded corners, larger icons, and more generous element spacing. It also introduces "Always" and "Only once" options, allowing users to choose whether the system remembers their default action, such as opening File Explorer.
In addition, the traditional properties panel that appears when right-clicking a file or folder is undergoing WinUI modernization, although the current preview implementation remains at an early stage. The team led by Pavan, head of Windows business, plans to introduce features such as Taskbar position adjustment and a clean version of Windows Search without Bing search in the September 2026 Patch Tuesday update. These WinUI-based features are currently in testing and will be further optimized before their official release.
