Microsoft Tests Dynamic Pricing for Xbox Game Pass with 12-Month Lapsed-User Discount
Microsoft is testing dynamic pricing and personalized discounts for Xbox Game Pass, offering some lapsed subscribers a 12-month locked rate of $16.09 per month for Ultimate, versus the standard $22.99. The offer, reported by multiple users, would save over $80 in the first year. Not all lapsed accounts receive the same terms, and Microsoft has not officially announced the mechanism.
Microsoft is testing dynamic pricing and personalized discount mechanisms for Xbox Game Pass. Based on feedback from multiple users in the gaming community, Microsoft has begun pushing non-public offers to certain accounts that have ended their subscriptions.
One long-time user who lapsed nearly a month ago said their account received an exclusive offer to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at $16.09 per month, with the discounted rate locked for 12 months before reverting to the standard $22.99 monthly fee. At this discount, the user would pay approximately $193 in the first year, saving more than $80 compared with the standard monthly rate.
The promotion is not a public campaign available to all users, but rather shows clear account-level variation. In related discussions, multiple lapsed players reported receiving offers at different amounts, with some accounts quoted at $18 or $20 per month, while other lapsed accounts or active accounts paying full price received no discount prompt. One player noted that a secondary account received the offer, while the primary account did not.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate previously experienced price fluctuations before the standard rate was set at $22.99 per month. After several adjustments, the platform has faced subscriber attrition, as well as a pattern of users subscribing temporarily during major game launches and canceling after completion. Offering a tiered discount of up to 12 months to lapsed users is Microsoft's approach to attracting re-subscriptions without changing the standard price. To date, Microsoft has not made an official announcement about this pricing mechanism, nor has it confirmed whether it will become a permanent policy.
