MTR to Upgrade Station Networks to 5G Gold Spectrum by 2027
MTR Corporation is advancing the upgrade of its station mobile networks to the 5G Gold Spectrum, with the first phase covering 24 stations expected to complete in early 2027. The company has also launched digital advertising campaigns at eight stations, featuring VR experiences for passengers, part of its broader push toward data-driven advertising.
MTR Corporation, in collaboration with local mobile network operators, has launched digital advertising campaigns at eight stations, using the stations' 5G mobile networks combined with virtual reality (VR) technology to offer immersive experiences. The company has continued to invest in digitizing station advertising in recent years and has adopted a data-driven advertising system.
Between September and October 2026, passengers can participate in VR activities at designated digital advertising zones in the eight stations, including immersive experiences of international sporting events such as fencing, as well as journeys through nostalgic Hong Kong. The stations will also livestream the virtual experiences, allowing on-site passengers to join in. MTR has also introduced the "MTR Advertising VR Experience Hall," enabling passengers to revisit classic station advertisements and observe the evolution of MTR advertising since the 1990s, from initial print ads to the incorporation of three-dimensional elements and, more recently, the application of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence, delivering more diverse and visually striking advertisements.
