MTR Tung Chung Line Extension Opens New Hong Kong-Bound Track at Tung Chung East

On the morning of 13 September 2026, MTR Corporation Airport Railway general manager Lui Kon-yee, Lantau and New Territories South engineering project general manager Pang Lap-hong, and Lantau engineering management head Leung Po-po joined rail enthusiasts and passengers on the first train.

MTR Corporation is progressing the Tung Chung Line Extension project. The new Hong Kong-bound track section connecting to Tung Chung East Station officially opened on 13 September 2026. From the first train, services departing Tung Chung Station began using the new section. Train frequencies were maintained, overall journey times were broadly similar to before, and services were largely smooth. The company will continue to monitor operations.

The engineering team will then begin the next phase of Tung Chung-bound track modification works. These include removing the section of the old Hong Kong-bound track that no longer needs to carry trains, freeing space for the Tung Chung-bound diversion works, and laying new track. The third and fourth turnout installation works are scheduled for late 2026 and 2027 respectively.
