OpenAI Adds 'Computer History' Feature for ChatGPT Work and Codex on macOS
OpenAI has introduced an optional feature called Computer History for ChatGPT Work and Codex on macOS, available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. After user authorization, it tracks daily computer activity across apps and websites, converting actions into memory and timelines so users can ask questions like what they were debugging yesterday. It stores data locally, excludes screen or audio capture, and can be paused or restricted. The rollout is global, with European Economic Area, UK, and Swiss users gaining access in coming weeks.
OpenAI has announced the rollout of a new optional feature named Computer History for ChatGPT Work and Codex on macOS, available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. Once authorized, the feature tracks daily computer activity across applications and websites, converting it into memory and timelines. Users can ask questions such as "What was I debugging yesterday?" or "Where did I leave off on that PR?" without repeating background information, and ChatGPT will locate relevant files, documents, and conversations across Google Docs, Slack, or browser tabs based on the recorded history.
The feature does not rely on screen or audio capture; instead, it generates memory by capturing interaction events such as clicks, typing, and app switches. This distinguishes it from the earlier Chronicle research project, which used screenshots and OCR technology. Computer History is disabled by default. Users can exclude specific apps and websites from access via a new menu bar option in macOS or through the ChatGPT desktop app settings, and can pause the feature at any time. All collected data is stored locally, and users can view what the system has captured as well as delete any data they do not wish to be recorded.
Computer History is being rolled out progressively to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users worldwide. OpenAI noted that users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland will gain access within the next few weeks.
