OpenAI Launches Astra for Law, a Legal AI Platform Built on GPT-6 Astra

OpenAI has released Astra for Law, an AI platform for the legal industry. Built on the GPT-6 Astra model and aimed at lawyers and legal institutions, the platform combines GPT-6 Astra with a large legal research database and customised legal analysis instructions. Its functions include conducting legal research based on a client's case facts, constructing argumentation, assessing contract terms, identifying weaknesses in a case, and analysing the impact of legal provisions on risk management. The platform has built a large-scale search index covering the United States legal system, including case judgments, statutes and regulations, court rules and administrative rulings, with total coverage of more than 230 million distinct documents, continuously updated every day. OpenAI has partnered with the Free Law Project to incorporate legal materials from CourtListener into the platform; this content covers more than 99.9% of the United States public precedent case law database.

Astra for Law's test data include legal research correctness, case law retrieval and extraction of key content from judgments. According to results from the Vals AI legal research benchmark, the system's pass rate in the overall answer-correctness evaluation was 54%, while GPT-6 Astra running on web search alone achieved a maximum score of 38.7%. In case law retrieval, Astra for Law found 24% more relevant cases than an ordinary model; when retrieving key content from correct judgments, its ability to extract relevant legal passages improved by up to 54%.

Astra for Law can connect directly to existing legal software systems. OpenAI has simultaneously launched 26 plug-ins developed by partners, supporting connections to legal platforms including iManage, Intapp, DeepJudge, Relativity and Clio. Thomson Reuters is integrating the HighQ case management system with ChatGPT and has presented a preview version of the CoCounsel Legal connector. Nine community plug-ins developed by organisations including LegalQuants, LECG and Skills. law provide 47 customisable legal skills, allowing law firms to build dedicated workflows according to their own needs.

On privacy controls, law firms participating in testing through the Trusted Access programme can use a zero data retention mode, under which API call data is not stored. ChatGPT Enterprise does not enter a human review process by default. OpenAI worked with Latham & Watkins to design controls for the legal industry, including functions such as information rights management, conflicts of interest isolation, execution of client instructions and internal law firm oversight systems. Astra for Law is currently available first to selected invited law firms in the United States.
