OpenAI Updates Codex External Agent Import, Supporting Claude Code and Cursor Configurations

OpenAI updated its external agent import instructions on August 11. Users can now import configurations from Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Cursor through the ChatGPT desktop application or the Codex CLI. The import function supports migrating instruction files, settings, skills, plugins, projects, and chat history from the past 30 days into Codex, without modifying or deleting the original configurations.

Imported content includes: CLAUDE. md converted to AGENTS. md, settings. json converted to config. toml, with Skills and plugins retained as-is, while slash commands are converted to skills. MCP server configurations, Hooks, and sub-agents all have corresponding conversions. Imported chat history is limited to local sessions, and the CLI version is capped at a maximum of 50 entries within the past 30 days. Project migration only takes over local directories and does not involve repository uploads or copying.

The /import command has been available since CLI version 0.140.0. The desktop application introduced the import flow on June 9, and CLI 0.145.0 on July 21 expanded coverage to six migration areas: settings, MCP servers, plugins, sessions, commands, and project-level memory. On August 7, CLI 0.147.0 added Cursor skill import and subsequent synchronization of imported sessions without generating duplicate content.

The import function has limitations. Community feedback indicates that approximately 90 percent of configurations convert automatically, with the remainder requiring manual adjustment. OpenAI provides a review checklist covering skill permissions, MCP server re-login, Hooks behavior review, and manual follow-up on plugins.
