Pentagon Selects Ford, GM, and BC Customs to Build Next-Gen Tactical Vehicle Prototypes, Plans to Deploy About

A core theme of the second term of the Trump administration is rebuilding America's industrial base, not only bringing manufacturing back to the United States but also restoring production capacity in industries deemed critical to national security. Defense production is at the center of this effort, as Washington increasingly turns to private companies to expand military manufacturing. The Pentagon's push to involve Detroit automakers in the Army's next-generation tactical vehicle manufacturing is the latest example.

Ford Motor is returning to military vehicle manufacturing in a substantial way, competing to develop the U. S. Army's next-generation tactical transport vehicle. The new platform will not only transport soldiers in complex terrain but also provide onboard power for drones, communications equipment, and other battlefield technologies.

Ford's prototype will be based on its Super Duty pickup platform, while General Motors is continuing to develop a heavy-duty derivative based on the Silverado, which is already under evaluation by the military. This effort reflects the Pentagon's broader strategy to leverage the manufacturing expertise of U. automakers to rebuild defense capabilities amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
