PICC Nominates Tan Jiong as Chairman; Shareholders to Vote on Aug 28
The board of People's Insurance Company of China (PICC) has nominated Tan Jiong as an executive director candidate and chairman, with the proposal to be submitted to shareholders at an extraordinary general meeting on Aug 28. Tan, 60, was appointed party secretary of PICC on July 23, succeeding Ding Xiangqun, who moved to head the National Financial Regulatory Administration in May 2026. A veteran banker, Tan previously held senior roles at Bank of China, ICBC, and as a provincial official in Guizhou, and most recently served as president of China Development Bank.
PICC is set to welcome a new chairman. On the evening of Aug 11, People's Insurance Company of China Group Co. , Ltd. announced that its board had reviewed and approved a proposal to nominate Tan Jiong as an executive director candidate and chairman, and agreed to submit it to shareholders for consideration. PICC will hold its first extraordinary general meeting of 2026 on Aug 28.
Earlier, on the afternoon of July 23, PICC held a cadre meeting at which Tan Jiong was appointed party secretary of PICC, succeeding Ding Xiangqun, who had been transferred in May 2026 to serve as party secretary and head of the National Financial Regulatory Administration.
Tan Jiong, 60, is a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a senior economist with a doctorate in economics from Wuhan University. He spent many years in the banking sector, notably at Bank of China. After graduating from Wuhan University in June 1988, he joined Bank of China's Wuhan branch as a credit officer and rose to become president and party secretary of the bank's Tibet branch and then its Yunnan branch. In September 2011, he became chairman of Bank of China Investment Management Co. , and later served as a member of the party committee of the bank's Shanghai headquarters. In January 2015, he was appointed party secretary of Bank of China's Guangdong branch, later becoming its president.
In October 2016, Tan left Bank of China to become a member of the party committee of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), later serving as vice president. After three years at ICBC, he moved to Guizhou province, where he held positions including member of the provincial party standing committee, vice governor and party group member of the provincial government, and head of the provincial party committee's united front work department. In February 2023, he became deputy party secretary of China Development Bank, and later served as vice chairman and president until his current appointment.
Currently, PICC's leadership team comprises Tan Jiong as party secretary; Zhao Peng as deputy party secretary and president; Shi Qingfeng as party committee member and head of the discipline inspection and supervision group stationed at PICC by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission; party committee members and vice presidents Xiao Jianyou, Cai Zhiwei, Zhang Jinhai, Tian Geng, and Zhang Daoming; board secretary Zeng Shangyou; business director Gong Xinyu; and legal director, chief compliance officer and chief risk officer Bai Feipeng.
