Reddit Considers Cutting Google’s AI Access as $60 Million Deal Faces Traffic and Quality Concerns

In 2024, Reddit signed a $60 million annual licensing agreement with Google, allowing Google to use Reddit content to train its AI models. By 2026, Reddit executives are evaluating the benefits of continuing to supply content to Google, and internal discussions have already considered cutting off Google’s access to Reddit content for AI purposes.

Reddit was founded in 2005 and began pursuing an initial public offering in 2021. The IPO was shelved due to prolonged lack of profitability and the internet industry downturn in 2022. The AI wave in 2023 offered Reddit a new direction. Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman has said that Reddit possesses a vast and unique archive of real-time human conversations covering nearly every topic, which is extremely valuable for AI training and research. Reddit has positioned itself as an “AI model data supplier,” with tens of millions of active users and a strong user profile: 64% of users are aged 18 to 29, and 63% hold a college degree or higher, enabling the continuous generation of the data that AI requires.

By 2026, the AI industry is no longer primarily concerned about a shortage of data; demand for data has shifted from scale to quality. The approach of broad expansion through massive general data and large-scale common-sense labeling has become increasingly marginalized. AI vendors are more focused on acquiring expert-level data in vertical domains. The industry is now paying attention to annual recurring revenue, and AI models that demonstrate depth in specific areas where commercialization has been achieved are favored.

After Reddit sold user-generated content to Google, that content increasingly appears in Google’s AI overviews. Users can obtain direct citations from Reddit posts in AI chatbots, reducing visits to the Reddit website. Previously, users needed to search for Reddit links and click through; now AI-integrated answers reduce direct traffic. Google claims that it includes links to relevant websites in AI answers and that users who access websites from Gemini are more engaged, but users of AI overviews typically do not click on reference links.

AI chatbots are powerful and, when connected to agents, can meet a variety of user needs, but they act as a one-way traffic black hole, siphoning traffic from content communities like Reddit. Reddit is gradually realizing that the $60 million paid by Google amounts to a “traffic acquisition cost,” but unlike traditional traffic acquisition, the traffic bought by AI vendors is nearly permanently lost.
