South Korean memory chip giant Samsung Electronics announced its second-quarter results on July 30. Data showed that robust AI demand continued to drive growth in its memory chip business, sending revenue and profit sharply higher. Revenue was 171.5 trillion won, up 130% year-on-year and 28% quarter-on-quarter. Net profit soared 1,299.9% year-on-year to 71.6245 trillion won.

Almost all of Samsung Electronics’ second-quarter profit came from its semiconductor business. The Device Solutions division posted sales of 127.5 trillion won and an operating profit of 89.2 trillion won, both record highs. Soaring chip prices hit the mobile business, with the Device eXperience division reporting sales of 48 trillion won and an operating loss of 800 billion won, its first quarterly loss on record. Additionally, subsidiary Harman reported sales of 4.6 trillion won and operating profit of 400 billion won; Samsung Display posted sales of 7.5 trillion won and operating profit of 700 billion won.

Samsung recently launched new foldable smartphones and other products, and announced an expanded strategic partnership with Broadcom in memory and foundry technologies.

Samsung Electronics shares fluctuated after the results. They rose as much as 4% in early trading before turning lower, eventually closing up 2.44% at 213,500 won. Samsung Electronics shares have fallen more than 40% from their all-time peak reached in June.
