Sony is placing warning labels on PlayStation 5 game boxes, informing customers that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 will be digital-only. Labels confirm that physical editions issued before that date remain fully playable, while later titles will be available only via PlayStation Store or digital codes. First photos surfaced on August 5, 2026, and buyers of the PS5 digital edition's disc drive accessory received similar notices. The CFO reaffirmed the decision to end physical production, and Sony has no plans to reverse course despite player concerns.

Sony has begun adding warning labels to PlayStation 5 game packaging, alerting consumers that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 will be available solely in digital form. The labels also state that physical games issued before January 2028 will continue to work on the console, but all subsequent new releases will be obtainable only through the PlayStation Store or via digital download codes purchased at retail.

First photos of the labels surfaced online on August 5, 2026, and users who purchased the disc drive accessory for the PS5 digital edition also reported receiving similar notifications, indicating the initiative is being rolled out broadly.

Some players have voiced concerns, arguing that losing the ability to freely buy, resell, trade, and collect physical games would disrupt established habits. Sony has previously stated that, after careful study, it decided to cease production of physical games. The company acknowledged community feedback but said it currently has no plans to adjust its strategy.
