SpaceX and Nvidia Partner on Space AI Satellites, First Launch Set for Q4 2027

SpaceX has partnered with Nvidia to develop orbital data center satellites for AI workloads, with the first launch of Starmind AI satellites planned for the fourth quarter of 2027. The project, filed with the U. S. Federal Communications Commission in early 2026, aims to deploy up to one million data center satellites in low Earth orbit. Nvidia will supply its Vera CPU and optimized Vera Rubin NVL72 rack systems as the computing core. The initiative seeks to overcome terrestrial AI data center constraints, though significant technical and cost challenges remain.

In early 2026, SpaceX submitted an application to the U. S. Federal Communications Commission to deploy up to one million data center satellites in low Earth orbit at altitudes between 500 and 2,000 kilometers. The orbital data center system is designed to support AI model inference, machine learning, edge computing, and related applications. The initiative aims to overcome bottlenecks faced by terrestrial AI data centers, including power supply constraints, high cooling costs, and large land requirements. SpaceX plans to leverage the large-scale, low-cost launch capability of its Starship rocket, as well as the satellite manufacturing, inter-satellite laser link, and constellation operations experience gained from Starlink, to upgrade its "communications constellation" into a "computing constellation."

At the end of August 2026, Elon Musk announced on X that the first batch of Starmind AI satellites, equipped with Nvidia chips, would be launched in the fourth quarter of 2027, reaching significant scale by 2028. Nvidia announced the same day that it would supply its next-generation Vera CPU for SpaceX's AI deployment and send an optimized version of its Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale system into orbit as the computing core for the first-generation Starmind satellites. This collaboration moves the world's first space-based AI data center project into the engineering implementation phase.

Orbital data centers still face several technical hurdles before they can be practically deployed. For heat dissipation, terrestrial data centers rely on liquid cooling, but the heat transfer mechanisms in the vacuum of space differ, and equipment must also be radiation-resistant. For data transmission, massive amounts of data need to be reliably sent back to Earth, and laser communication technology company Transcelestial is researching relevant solutions.

Construction cost is another major challenge. It is estimated that building a one-gigawatt orbital data center would cost approximately $170 billion, more than three times the cost of a traditional terrestrial data center. To reduce costs, SpaceX is building a vertically integrated supply chain: on one hand, it relies on the Starship heavy-lift rocket to lower launch costs; on the other, through a chip factory called Terafab, it is collaborating with Tesla and Intel to develop and manufacture its own AI chips, thereby controlling both launch and underlying computing hardware.
