Stripe Acquires AI Model Platform OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion

Global payment services provider Stripe has finalized its acquisition of OpenRouter, an AI model aggregation platform, for more than $7 billion. OpenRouter was valued at approximately $1.3 billion when it completed a funding round several months ago, making the acquisition price more than five times its valuation at that time.

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in New York, OpenRouter provides AI model aggregation services for enterprises and developers. Users can access more than 400 AI models through the platform and select or switch between different models based on task requirements, usage costs, and operating efficiency. The platform also offers backup options when models used by enterprises experience outages, and helps clients understand which models are more favored in the technology industry.

In May 2026, OpenRouter said the platform had 8 million developers. Recent growth has been driven mainly by users developing agentic features in software, which often require connections to multiple model providers and data sources and therefore need infrastructure compatible with several service providers. OpenRouter has raised more than $150 million in cumulative funding, with investors including CapitalG, the investment arm of Alphabet, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Sequoia Capital.

OpenRouter Chief Executive Alex Atallah previously co-founded OpenSea, a digital asset trading platform that raised more than $400 million before its usage declined sharply. Atallah stepped down from OpenSea in July 2022 and founded OpenRouter less than a year later.

Stripe primarily provides payment processing services to enterprises, and the acquisition will expand its business footprint in AI-related areas. OpenRouter's business model allows developer clients to access multiple AI models, and its prominence reflects enterprises' growing emphasis on the cost of using AI. Currently, OpenAI and Anthropic remain at the forefront of model capabilities, while low-cost models from several Chinese companies can also meet many task requirements. Cost, performance, and stability are becoming key considerations for enterprises when choosing AI models.
