Stripe in Talks to Acquire OpenRouter for About $10 Billion

Payment giant Stripe is in talks to acquire OpenRouter, an AI model aggregation platform. Two months ago, OpenRouter completed a $113 million Series B funding round at a valuation of about $1.3 billion. If the $10 billion acquisition price is finalized, it would represent a nearly sevenfold increase in valuation in less than two months.

Founded in 2023, OpenRouter offers access to more than 400 models and connects over 70 model and inference service providers. Developers can use a single account and a single set of APIs to call models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and a wide range of open-source models. Regular pay-as-you-go customers pay a 5.5% platform fee. In May 2026, when OpenRouter announced its Series B funding, it said the number of tokens processed weekly on the platform had grown from 5 trillion to 25 trillion over six months, a fourfold increase.

Stripe processed a total payment volume of $1.9 trillion in 2025, up 34%. OpenRouter founder Atara has described his company as "the Stripe of the AI field." Stripe is extending its business from payment processing fees to token call fees, with a similar business model. OpenRouter charges by marking up model access, buying at lower prices and achieving higher gross margins. The platform handles requests from over 5 million developers, accumulating a large amount of cross-platform demand data.

The model ecosystem in China differs from that in the United States. In the US, mainstream models are predominantly closed-source, with sales channels mainly through official websites and cloud platforms. In China, the market is dominated by open-source models, with dozens or even hundreds of legitimate token service providers, each differing in inference engines, hardware resources, quantization methods, and concurrency capabilities. Qingcheng Jizhi's AI Ping platform covers more than 30 domestic large-model API service providers, primarily offering model service comparison and performance evaluation features.
