Take-Two Subpoenas Discord Again in GTA 6 Leak Probe, Withdraws YouTube User ID Request
Take-Two Interactive has filed new court documents in its ongoing investigation into the Grand Theft Auto 6 leak, issuing a second subpoena to Discord for additional records while seeking to seal the filings to avoid alerting suspected infringers. The company also withdrew a DMCA subpoena request to Google on August 28. The investigation has narrowed, with new details on a Discord user and a known user's identity. GTA 6 remains slated for release on November 19.
Take-Two Interactive is continuing its investigation into the leak of content from Grand Theft Auto 6, describing the probe as advancing rapidly. The company has submitted new court filings, issuing a second request to Discord for relevant records and simultaneously moving to seal the documents to prevent details of the investigation from reaching suspected infringers. Previously, Take-Two had sought subpoenas from platforms including Discord, Microsoft, X, and YouTube to obtain business and investigative records that could help identify the leaker, and had asked YouTube to remove leaked videos. Such subpoenas allow rights holders to request information related to infringement from third parties before filing a full lawsuit.
The new application, filed on August 28, narrows the scope of the investigation. The filings show that the company has newly identified a Discord user, obtained additional identifying information on another known user, and received supplementary leads on previously listed community servers. Take-Two stated in the filings that these accounts and servers are involved in the same infringing activity described in the initial application. The requested materials differ from those covered by the first subpoena and include additional clarification regarding a user ID from the original request.
Unlike the previously public subpoena applications, the contents of this filing have been sealed. As of September 1, the court had not yet ruled on whether to keep the documents sealed, and the related subpoena had not been issued.
Separately, on August 28, Take-Two withdrew its request for a DMCA subpoena to Google. Judge John P. Cronan had not yet approved the application and had asked the company to clarify the specific connection of three individuals to the case. Take-Two subsequently stated that it no longer needed the particular materials sought by the subpoena, noting that the investigation remains fluid. GTA 6 is currently in development for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a planned release date of November 19.
