TCL Sues Samsung in US Over Mini LED TV Marketing Claims
TCL has filed a lawsuit in a US federal court in Los Angeles accusing Samsung of falsely marketing its M-series televisions as Mini LED products. TCL claims the M-series, launched in March 2026, is based on an older LED line and lacks the technical upgrades typical of Mini LED, while being sold below TCL's entry-level Mini LED prices. Samsung has vowed to defend the suit vigorously, asserting its product descriptions are accurate. TCL seeks an injunction and unspecified damages.
TCL has filed a lawsuit in a US federal court in Los Angeles against Samsung, alleging that the latter has engaged in false advertising by marketing certain televisions as "Mini LED" products despite lacking the associated technical features. Samsung has responded by stating that it will vigorously defend against the lawsuit and maintains that its product descriptions are accurate.
According to the complaint, TCL is challenging Samsung's M-series televisions, which were launched in March 2026. TCL alleges that Samsung has packaged an ordinary LED television derived from an older product line as a Mini LED product, selling it at a price below TCL's entry-level Mini LED televisions. The lawsuit contends that the M-series does not include the technological upgrades typically associated with Mini LED and is essentially a modified version of Samsung's standard LED television offerings.
Mini LED televisions use smaller and more numerous backlight beads to achieve finer local dimming control, which generally enhances dynamic range and contrast. TCL claims that its Mini LED televisions deliver noticeably superior picture quality compared with ordinary LED televisions in these respects. The complaint also states that because Samsung failed to offer Mini LED televisions at competitive prices, TCL surpassed Samsung to become the leading seller of Mini LED televisions in the US between 2023 and 2025.
After Samsung launched the M-series at a lower price and promoted it as a Mini LED product, TCL believes its previously achieved market share has been squeezed. In response to TCL's allegations, Samsung issued a statement saying it plans to actively defend the case and "fully supports the quality of its products and the accuracy of their descriptions." As of now, the court has not ruled on the claims raised by TCL.
TCL is requesting that the court prohibit Samsung from continuing to advertise the products in question as "Mini LED" and is seeking monetary compensation, the amount of which has not yet been specified.
