Tesla Rolls Out First Cybertruck Using Texas-Refined Lithium
Tesla has produced its first Cybertruck at its Texas gigafactory using lithium refined at its own Gulf Coast plant in Robstown, Texas. The vehicle is powered by Tesla's 4680 battery cells, with all battery-grade lithium hydroxide sourced from the company's new refinery, which began production in early 2026. This marks the first time Tesla has incorporated its own refined lithium into a mass-produced vehicle, though the company has not announced a timeline for broader adoption.
Tesla announced that the first Cybertruck built with lithium from its Gulf Coast refinery in Texas has rolled off the assembly line at its Texas gigafactory. Elon Musk shared the news with the caption "American-made lithium." The vehicle is equipped with Tesla's self-developed 4680 battery cells, and all battery-grade lithium hydroxide inside the cells comes from Tesla's own Gulf Coast lithium refinery.
The refinery, located in Robstown, Texas, broke ground in 2023 and began production in early 2026. It uses a low-acid, environmentally friendly process to convert spodumene concentrate into battery-grade lithium hydroxide, which is then supplied to the 4680 cell production line at the Austin factory. After cell assembly, the batteries are installed directly into Cybertrucks built at the same site, completing lithium refining, battery manufacturing, and vehicle assembly all within Texas. Previously, most of Tesla's battery lithium was refined overseas, making this the first time the company has incorporated its own refined lithium into a mass-produced vehicle. At present, only the first prototype has been completed, and Tesla has not disclosed a timeline for large-scale conversion or whether it will extend the use of domestically refined lithium to other 4680-based models such as the Model Y.
