Tohoku Electric Delays Onagawa Dry Storage Facility to September, Second Delay; Facility to Hold 1,380 Fuel

Tohoku Electric Power announced on the 27th that construction of the dry storage facility at the Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi Prefecture will be delayed from July to September, marking the second postponement after an initial delay from May. The company cited the Nuclear Regulation Authority's ongoing review as the reason. The facility will comprise two buildings capable of storing up to 1,380 fuel assemblies. The first building is scheduled to start operations in March 2028, with construction of the second building beginning in August 2030, unchanged from the original plan.

Tohoku Electric Power Company announced on the 27th that the construction start date for the dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at the Onagawa nuclear power plant (located in Ishinomaki City and Onagawa Town, Miyagi Prefecture) has been postponed from July to September. This is the second delay following the original plan to start in May. Tohoku Electric stated that the review by the Nuclear Regulation Authority still requires some time.

On the same day, Tohoku Electric submitted a revised construction plan to the Nuclear Regulation Authority. According to the plan, the first building is scheduled to start operations in March 2028, and construction of the second building will begin in August 2030. This schedule remains unchanged.

The dry storage facility will take fuel that has been sufficiently cooled from the spent fuel pool, seal it in metal containers, and store it using natural air convection. Tohoku Electric will build two reinforced concrete buildings with a total capacity of up to 1,380 fuel assemblies, aimed at ensuring the remaining capacity of the fuel pool.
