WeChat Earthquake Early Warning Adds Shake-Intensity and Location-Update Functions

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

WeChat has launched two new functions for its earthquake early-warning service: shake-intensity aggregation and location updating. The shake-intensity feature lets users report their felt shaking after an alert, generating a public intensity map through professional algorithms. The location-update function prompts users to refresh their alert subscription location when they move, improving alert targeting. Developed with the China Earthquake Networks Center and National Emergency Broadcasting, the service has now issued alerts for more than 700 earthquakes and surpassed 60 million subscribers.

WeChat Earthquake Early Warning has launched two new functions: "Shake-Intensity Aggregation" and "Location Update". Building on its existing millisecond-level alert delivery and billion-user coverage capability, the upgrade adds shake-intensity feedback and location-based services. The Shake-Intensity Aggregation function collects and displays public feedback on shaking after an earthquake. After receiving an alert and moving to safety, users can enter the alert details page of the WeChat Earthquake Early Warning mini program, locate themselves via a map, and select the corresponding intensity level. The information is then processed by professional algorithms and rules to generate a shaking-intensity distribution map, helping the public understand actual shaking conditions in different areas.

The Location Update function improves the alignment between earthquake alerts and the user's actual location. When users travel or their location changes, the mini program will prompt them to update their alert subscription location, ensuring that early-warning information stays consistent with their current activity area. The upgrade was jointly launched by the China Earthquake Networks Center, National Emergency Broadcasting, and Tencent. The three parties collaborated on business scenario design, professional algorithm research and development, technical architecture construction, and product function upgrades.

In July 2024, the National Earthquake Intensity Rapid Reporting and Early Warning Project was officially completed. In August of the same year, WeChat connected to authoritative early-warning data from the China Earthquake Networks Center, and the national earthquake early-warning service was officially launched, forming a public service system composed of one national mini program and 31 provincial-level mini programs. Leveraging WeChat's user coverage, high-concurrency push capability, and compatibility across smartphone brands and operating systems, alert information can be pushed within seconds with prominent reminders. As of August 2026, the platform has issued alerts for more than 700 earthquakes, and its number of subscribing users has exceeded 60 million.
