WeChat Pay HK announced that two of its artificial intelligence innovations have been selected for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's Generative AI Sandbox. Launched in March 2026 with regulators and Cyberport, the initiative tests AI applications in a controlled environment. WeChat Pay HK will validate AI agents for mobile payments, payment infrastructure, and anti-fraud, aiming to build a payment ecosystem connecting user- and merchant-side AI agents.

WeChat Pay HK announced that two of its artificial intelligence innovation cases have been selected for the Generative AI Sandbox launched by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). The programme, jointly introduced in March 2026 by the HKMA together with the Securities and Futures Commission, the Insurance Authority, the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, and Cyberport, aims to test generative AI applications in the financial sector within a risk-controlled environment.

WeChat Pay HK will conduct technical validation in three areas: AI agents for mobile payments, AI-agent payment infrastructure, and AI-driven anti-fraud measures. The company will explore building a payment infrastructure ecosystem that connects AI agents on both the user and merchant sides, positioning its payment services for the era of AI agents.

In the technical validation, WeChat Pay HK plans to study how AI agents can improve payment interaction efficiency between users and merchants, while testing the compatibility and security of payment infrastructure. It will also use generative AI to strengthen fraud detection capabilities, building a multi-layered protection mechanism to enhance risk identification and prevention in the fintech industry. The tests will proceed within the regulatory framework, ensuring a balance between transaction security and user experience.
