WeChat Says AI Assistant Xiaowei Does Not Read Chat History

On September 15, 2026, WeChat responded to privacy concerns involving its AI assistant Xiaowei. WeChat said the information Xiaowei can access does not exceed the scope of information the user themselves is permitted to view, and that Moments content a user has deleted will not be seen by Xiaowei. Regarding chat records, Xiaowei is only temporarily invoked when a user actively initiates a query in a chat scenario, at which point it reads the most recent chat information locally from the WeChat client, and after analyzing and summarizing it, does not retain the original chat records, following a process logic of discarding them after use.

WeChat also said claims that Xiaowei directly reads chat records and secretly views all private information are untrue. Xiaowei is a native AI assistant developed by the WeChat team and is currently in limited internal testing. Users can converse with Xiaowei by text or voice to check the weather, track deliveries, and order food delivery. In addition, in scenarios such as Moments, official accounts, chats, and Channels, Xiaowei can also be invoked at any time when needed to summarize content and provide additional information.
