Zeiss Unveils Aviation Holographic Tech at 2026 Farnborough; HUD Five to Six Times Lighter
At the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, Zeiss showcased holographic aviation technology using micro-optical elements and laser diffraction. At the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, Zeiss presented its latest holographic aviation technology. The system employs micro-optical elements that manipulate light using laser and diffraction principles; these elements can be printed on film or embedded in a single flat glass pane. When combined with a specific wavelength laser emitted by an image generation unit, the film itself achieves 3D holographic light steering. Because the embedded microstructures react only to lasers of specific wavelengths and incident angles, ambient sunlight passes through the glass, avoiding the white-out and distortion seen in traditional displays under bright conditions.
At the show, Zeiss displayed a 3D virtual button floating behind a glass panel. With built-in motion sensors, passengers could operate the button without touching a physical surface. In cabin applications, once the holographic film is embedded in glass partitions, a holographic image of a crew member can appear to greet passengers and deliver real-time announcements or safety instructions. For the cockpit, Zeiss introduced a holographic head-up display (HUD) system that compresses the projection optics, significantly reducing device size without sacrificing field of view. Combined with an enhanced flight vision system, the HUD assists pilots in identifying terrain and obstacles ahead during fog or other adverse weather, enabling precise landings. A real-time facial recognition and security scanning system based on holographic glass was also demonstrated.
Zeiss stated that the system is five to six times lighter than a traditional HUD, and the substantial reduction in size and weight can deliver fuel savings for large commercial aircraft. The primary target markets are business aviation and commercial aviation, with future evaluation of low-cost alternatives for general aviation.
