2026 Summer Box Office Falls 34% to RMB 7.9 Billion; 'Kung Fu Women's Football' Leads with RMB 2.2 Billion

Published: Updated: By 24TopNews Editorial Desk

The 2026 summer box office in China totaled RMB 7.9 billion, down 34% from RMB 12 billion in 2025. 'Kung Fu Women's Football' topped the chart with RMB 2.219 billion over 27 days, followed by 'The Eight Immortals' and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'. At least nine films shifted release dates, with several pulling out after poor ticket sales. Industry losses narrowed to below 10% from 20% for domestic films, yet most new releases still failed to turn a profit.

The cumulative box office for the 2026 summer film season reached RMB 7.9 billion. As of press time, the top-grossing film, 'Kung Fu Women's Football', had earned RMB 2.219 billion over 27 days of release. The second-place film, 'The Eight Immortals', took in RMB 1.284 billion, while third-ranked 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' grossed RMB 1.046 billion. During the same period in 2025, the summer box office total was close to RMB 12 billion, with the top three films — 'Nanjing Photo Studio', 'The Monsters of Langlang Mountain', and 'Catching Shadows' — earning RMB 3.017 billion, RMB 1.719 billion, and RMB 1.265 billion, respectively.

Multiple films adjusted their release schedules during the 2026 summer season. On July 25, the animated film 'Three Kingdoms Part One: Fight for Luoyang' announced its withdrawal after 16 days in theaters. On July 26, 'When Stars Shine' was pulled just one day after a rushed release. On July 28, 'Wukong the Great Sage' exited after five days. On July 31, 'Kill Bill: Bloody Compendium' was withdrawn and rescheduled for September 4. On August 5, 'Tang Dynasty Detective' moved its planned August 8 release to August 22. Earlier, 'Heart Dog' and 'Just Kidding' had also shifted their dates, bringing the total number of films that underwent advance, withdrawal, or rescheduling to at least nine in the 2026 summer season.

Box office performance for withdrawn films was generally weak. 'Three Kingdoms Part One: Fight for Luoyang' and 'When Stars Shine' each failed to cross RMB 100 million, while 'Wukong the Great Sage' earned less than RMB 200,000. 'Three Kingdoms Part One' was produced by Zhuiguang Animation and took three years to make, with a Douban opening score of 8.1. 'When Stars Shine' featured actors Huang Bo, Wu Lei, and Gao Ye, and scored 7.5 on Douban. Despite critical recognition, these films failed to achieve both acclaim and commercial success.

Historically, some films that were re-released after withdrawal performed poorly. 'Asura' had a budget of RMB 750 million and was pulled after three days. 'Operation Leviathan' earned RMB 393 million during the 2025 Spring Festival season before being withdrawn; its re-release brought total box office to about RMB 420 million. 'The Red Carpet' was pulled seven days into its 2024 Spring Festival run and grossed RMB 93.643 million after re-release. 'Nothing Can't Be Solved by a Hotpot' was withdrawn after six days and never returned. 'Viva La Vida' became an exception, earning RMB 274 million after re-release.

Among production companies, 'Three Kingdoms Part One: Fight for Luoyang' was produced and distributed by Zhuiguang Animation, Damai Entertainment, and China Film. 'When Stars Shine' was backed by Damai Entertainment, Weixiang International, Gongfu Pictures, Huaren Pictures, and Zhouzhuang Investment. Damai Entertainment had a hit with 'A Letter to Grandma' during the 2026 May Day holiday, but several of its other productions and distributions underperformed, including 'The Outcast', 'Upstream', 'Dongji Island', 'Burning City', 'When Stars Shine', 'Catch the Spy', and 'The Biao Ren'.

Overall market data shows that the loss rate for domestic films fell from 20% to below 10%, meaning that at least nine out of every ten released titles lost money. The winner-take-all effect is pronounced, with box office increasingly driven by word of mouth. Promotional and distribution channels have become more concentrated, and advance financing has emerged as an industry threshold. Smaller companies struggle to take on projects due to funding pressure, pushing resources toward major platforms.
