AI Forward Deployment Roles Expand as AWS Commits $1 Billion to Field Engineer Teams

The role of the Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is expanding in enterprise AI adoption, giving rise to a new position that combines technical, management and organizational capabilities: the Forward Deployed Executive (FDX). FDEs embed directly with client teams to resolve technical deployment issues, but they often remain distant from the senior management that controls budgets, organizational structure and corporate culture. FDX, by contrast, is viewed as an "external CEO" who must not only understand technical solutions but also participate in client executive decisions, identify business problems, drive organizational change, and overcome the psychological and emotional barriers that impede progress.

Several technology companies have already made moves in this direction. In June 2026, AWS announced a $1 billion investment to establish a Forward Deployed Engineering team, planning to station thousands of engineers with client teams to jointly develop and deploy intelligent agent systems. Anthropic is likewise building a field delivery model. Palantir stations engineers involved in technology development directly within client teams, where they handle deployment and also continuously identify new application opportunities to expand client usage. MiniMax has posted a "Solutions/Forward Deployed Engineer FDE Lead" role requiring engagement in education, healthcare, finance and manufacturing industry scenarios, identifying real obstacles in AI adoption, completing end-to-end solution design, and feeding data generated from industry scenarios back into model training. MiniMax specifically noted that the role is not purely pre-sales; it must maintain a direct connection with the model and algorithms teams.

Feishu's "Enterprise AI Transformation Consultant" role requires working at client business sites, taking responsibility from product launch and pain-point identification through AI scenario design to outcome measurement, with requirements for executive communication, business consulting, technical solutions and complex project execution. Baidu Intelligent Cloud's Smart Industry Solutions Architect must understand client business strategy and AI transformation goals, communicate with client CXOs, write proof-of-concept proposals, calculate token costs, and coordinate sales, product, R&D, marketing and ecosystem partners. Huawei's AI Solutions Architect similarly requires the ability to engage with senior and mid-level client executives, help design large model and AI application architectures, resolve project challenges, ensure delivery, and feed frontline requirements back into product planning.

The FDX title is now entering the hiring market. In July 2026, AI consulting and engineering firm Provectus posted a "Senior Product Owner/Forward Deployed Executive - AI Delivery" position, merging product ownership, client delivery and senior business advocacy into a single role. In January 2026, an investor reported that a portfolio company had signed a six-figure contract in which the client was not buying software but rather requiring the founder to embed with the enterprise for several months as an external executive, participating in AI and data strategy development and entering real decision-making scenarios.

Two practical cases illustrate the FDX's actual impact.
