China Express Association Targets 1 Billion Annual Bamboo Packages; Prices About 10% Higher

Bamboo powder is ground, modified, and blended with fully biodegradable plastics to form bamboo-based degradable materials for use in express packaging. Previously, bamboo was mainly processed into traditional products such as furniture and tableware; now researchers are converting it into green materials. The bamboo-based materials in the laboratory exhibit degradable properties, offering the express industry a new environmentally friendly option. In June 2026, the China Express Association issued the Replace Plastic with Bamboo, Go Green initiative, proposing that annual usage of bamboo express packaging reach 200 million, 300 million, 450 million, 680 million, and 1 billion pieces in successive years over five years, with average annual growth of 50 percent. Tao Chunyan, deputy director of the Sanming City Postal Administration in Fujian Province, said major express brands have completed application testing of bamboo-based packaging products locally. Liu Yuxiang, a manager at SF Express, said bamboo packaging bags currently cost about 10% more than traditional packaging bags, but large-scale production may reduce the price difference.
